Victorian Veganism
Welcome
Hi, I'm Oscar Pike, and I made this website to showcase my research from the Sheffield Undergraduate Research Project in 2022.
Although the term vegan was only coined in 1944, the collection of evidence on this website demonstrates that veganism was present in nineteenth-century Britain. The other pages on this website contain primary and secondary sources from the Victorian period that directly discuss veganism and topics related to veganism. I have also included my comments and thoughts on each source. On the final page, I provide a brief overview of my overall findings on Victorian veganism.

As vegan scholarship continues to grow, I encourage people to use this website to aid in future research. This collection of evidence is open to expansion, so feel free to contact me if you have anything to add. I would like to thank my supervisors, Dr. Martin O'Donoghue and Dr. Colin Reid for their help, as well as the University of Sheffield for facilitating this project.
